CBD Oil and Autism: Is It Safe and Does It Work?

Autism Spectrum Disorder, or “Autism” for short, is a condition that affects children at a young age. Children with autism possess strange behavioral traits as well as difficulty in communicating.

Autism is a serious condition that affects the mental health of a child. Autism makes it hard for them to gain friends at school and are sometimes bullied for their condition.

What Research Says

There is no cure for autism as of late and parents have turned to Cannabidiol (CBD) oil to help reduce its symptoms.

Research shows that a study conducted in Israel about CBD oil and its potential help for autism has yielded promising results. There were about 188 autism patients that are tested in the study and 80% of them have improved conditions.

Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD oil is known to give relief to anxiety, and epilepsy. Some people may be alarmed since CBD is a compound that is extracted from marijuana.

But in reality, CBD is one of the “safer” compounds compared to others such as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is also found in marijuana that can make you “high.”

And to cast your worries away, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already made CBD legal as an ingredient on some medication for epilepsy treatment.

Continued usage of CBD helps reduce autism symptoms. CBD oil helps children with autism to be calmer as well as to sleep well at night.

Knowing More About Autism and CBD Oil

If you’re a parent with a child that has autism and is already convinced about the positive benefits of CBD oil, here are a few things you should keep in mind before using CBD oil.

  • Have a trip to the doctor’s office and ask for a consultation. Let your child be checked for any kind of allergies or sensitivities that can be caused by CBD.
  • Make sure that CBD is legal in your country. It is already legal in the US, but it still maybe not in others.
  • Do thorough research about the brand of the CBD oil before buying. Ensure that they are produced by a reputable company.
  • Create a comprehensive comparison note for your child’s behavior before and after using CBD. This helps you keep track if there are any improvements. Don’t forget to update it from time to time most preferably on a weekly basis.

Using CBD Oil

CBD comes in different forms. There are tablets, capsules, chewables, and most of all, oils. CBD oils have a bitter taste compared to chewables. And your child may spit it out before it reaches their throat.

What you need to do is prepare some water beside you for your child to drink after applying a few drops. Make sure to follow the recommended dosage.

Avoid letting your child overdose with CBD oil as it may pose some serious side effects. Consult your doctor and ask for recommendations. Aside from relying on over-the-counter CBD oils, you can opt for a prescription-based instead as it is backed up with the doctor’s approval.
